A spontaneous decision by a Florida man to buy a scratch-off lottery ticket has transformed him into a millionaire. Travis Hall, a 44-year-old resident of Port St. Lucie, Florida, recently visited a Publix grocery store with the intention of purchasing a sandwich. While there, he decided to take a chance on a $20 Monopoly Doubler scratch-off lottery ticket, a choice that led to him winning a substantial $5 million prize.
In an official statement from the Florida Lottery, Hall explained, “I stopped at Publix to grab a sub and decided to try my luck with a $20 Scratch-Off. Little did I know, it would turn into a $5 million-dollar win!”
Hall’s fortune was indeed with him when he bought the ticket. According to the Florida Lottery, the $20 Monopoly Doubler scratch-off offers a potential total of $493 million in cash prizes, with only eight top prizes valued at $5 million each. The game boasts overall odds of winning at 1-in-3.02.
Interestingly, Hall didn’t immediately realize he was a millionaire; he took some time before revealing the ticket’s numbers. He shared, “After waiting days to scratch the ticket, I handed it to my wife — my hands were trembling from disbelief at what I was seeing,” when speaking with lottery officials.
Hall decided to receive his winnings as a one-time lump-sum payment of $3,994,698.00. However, he wasn’t the only one to benefit from the ticket; the retailer that sold him the ticket will receive a $10,000 bonus commission for handling the transaction.
The funds generated from Florida’s scratch-off games have contributed more than $18.09 billion to the state’s Educational Enhancement Trust Fund (EETF), according to the organization. Florida’s lottery also supports the Bright Futures Scholarship Program, to which it has contributed over $44 billion since its establishment.
Hall’s significant win coincides with the Powerball jackpot reaching an impressive $672 million in anticipation of Wednesday’s drawing.
