Florida man hides in McDonald’s trash compactor after fleeing traffic stop: deputies

In Avon Park, Florida, a man was discovered concealing himself in a waste disposal unit at McDonald’s after attempting to evade a traffic stop, as per law enforcement officials. Danilo Melendez Jr. was apprehended on Saturday and now faces multiple charges, including the unauthorized possession of prescription drugs, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting arrest, as detailed by the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies conducted a stop on Melendez just before 12:30 a.m. on Saturday at the intersection of West Hall Street and South Hart Avenue. Allegedly, the 27-year-old individual was riding a bicycle without proper lighting or reflectors and was towing a makeshift wagon at the time.

A K-9 unit was brought to inspect the wagon, and it alerted deputies to the presence of prohibited substances inside. Melendez’s behavior reportedly grew increasingly agitated, raising suspicion, as he insisted that only tools were stored within the wagon. However, deputies discovered prescription pills, a small quantity of fentanyl, and a syringe testing positive for methamphetamine inside a cooler within the wagon.

As Melendez was on the verge of being handcuffed, he fled from the scene of the traffic stop. He was later located hiding in a nearby trash compactor at a McDonald’s restaurant.

Subsequently, he was taken into custody and booked into the Highlands County Detention Center.
